Embark on a trip of a lifetime to Ankara, Nicea, Istanbul & Edirne to explore emerging Christianities!  This tour examines the letters of St Peter in context led by Fr Kieran O’Mahony OSA.

Day 1
Arrival at Ankara, meet and greet at Ankara Esenboğa Airport. Checking in to the hotel in Ankara.

Day 2
Morning lecture after breakfast. As this particular day is “Victory Holiday” (a national holiday), various locations in Ankara, including the Mausoleum of Atatürk (Anıtkabir) will be too crowded. Therefore, we will begin with a visit to the Hitite capital Hattuşa (Boğazkale), a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986, and the other Hittite ruins in the vicinity. Ankara Boğazkale is 56 kms, roughly one hour. Dinner and overnight in Ankara.

Day 3 
Morning lecture after breakfast. Visit of the Mausoleum of Atatürk in the morning, after lunch visit of Augustus Temple and the nearby Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Dinner and overnight in Ankara.

Day 4
Morning lecture after breakfast. Depart from Ankara to İznik (Nicea). Arriving midday, we can first eat lunch then visit the St. Sophia Church, and the Byzantine ruins around the lake. Later, we can see the tile workshops. Dinner and overnight in İznik or nearby.

Day 5 
After breakfast and lecture, check out of your hotel and depart for İstanbul. After lunch, visit St. Sophia (Church) Museum and the Underground Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı). Check in to Novotel İstanbul, Zeytinburnu. Celebration of Mass, dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 6 
Morning lecture after breakfast. Visit of Hippodrome, The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque), Topkapı Palace. Dinner and overnight in İstanbul.

Day 7 
Morning lecture after breakfast. Visit the Seven Dungeons in the morning, see Theodosian Walls on the way, and visit The Museum of Archeology in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in İstanbul.

Day 8
Morning lecture after breakfast. Mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent (Architect Sinan’s second best), tour of the Bosphorus by boat, after lunch visit of Spice Market (Mısır Çarşısı), and visit the Church of the Virgin Kyriotissa (Kalenderhane Camii) from outside. Dinner and overnight in İstanbul.

Day 9 
Morning lecture after breakfast. Depart to the ancient city Hadrianopolis, now known as Edirne. Visit of the Selimiye Mosque (Architect Sinan’s masterpiece) and Burmese Mosque (with three minaret balconies). Time permitting visit to some other Ottoman ruins and return to İstanbul for dinner and overnight.

Day 10
Morning lecture after breakfast. Covered Bazaar and the Turkish Bath for those who would like have the experience. A leisurely last day. Dinner and overnight.

Day 11
Departure for Dublin. As the flight is at 13.15, we have to check out from the hotel around 09.00 hrs.
